Mount Vesuvius started erupting in 1879 killing about 5,000 people, and covering Pompeii in a foot of pumice and ash. A construction crew found the city while trying to build a building. Vesuvius has had 12 eruptions since the these bad ones in 1879.

The most famous eruption happened in Pompeii. There had been a 1,000 degree F. avalanche destroyed many towns including Pompeii. The citizens were all covered in ashes and toxic gases and most suffered from suffocation due to Carbon Monoxide. In just one more blow Mount Vesuvius could have had every town/city would have been buried just like Pompeii. Luckily the people who found Pompeii they had found that the ashes had preserved it.

The eruption of Mount Vesuvius was the largest and most devastating eruption ever of Mount Vesuvius.
The later eruptions of Mount Vesuvius would prove to not be as destructive as the one that killed and almost wiped out all of Pompeii's population.

Pompeii was a very rich city that was destroyed from the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius. Over 5,000 people died during the terrible incident. Pompeii was covered in ash for a totally LONG LONG LONG TIME! So as you can see, the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius was very dangerous.

The people who saw the eruption said that the volcano could swallow the city in less then a minute.
The volcano lava was over 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit.
The museum sculpted people's bodies who had died in the eruption and there were just as they were when the died.

When Mount Vesuvius erupted it was raining rocks and ash crumbling Pompeii in seconds.
This very second the city Naples could be wiped out right now by the same volcano.
