Who will win WWF?

Who will win the Words With Friends tournament -- administrators or students? Students are coming to the IT Cafe (Information Technology Cafe) for a cup of hot chocolate and a little practice time on the iPads. Sixth grade students (Zane, Emily, Nathan and Kaylee) and learned strategic plays during a Cafe session with me last week. Seventh grade students (Carmen and Elexus) came twice! (I think the competition is on!) Once everyone has had a chance to practice, the HCMS WWF Tournament will be announced.

WWF is an educational application, similar to Scrabble. Students will play on iPads or Nook Color, while administrators will play on iPads, Kindle Fire or other devices for the tournament. This application shows instant scoring and tile status. Letters are moved by touch across the screen and a slight shake of the device can resort letters. Using this app, students will figure out how versatile the iPads and technology devices can be!

It was an honor to present our media program at the Georgia Convention Center this week, along with these library media specialists from Georgia: Janell McClure, Tayklor Wickline, Cristina Dover, Shawn Hinger, (me :-) ) and Anna Murdock. We collaborated online with a Google Doc to make a Weebly about our programs for our presentation at the Georgia Education Technology Conference (GaETC).

Book Fair Preview Today!

Teachers and staff are invited to look over the book fair today (Thursday ...no students yet). The book fair officially begins Friday morning and will run through next Thursday.

Zack T. and Matthew N. are student crew members for this fair. (They were here when the book fair truck arrived and helped move tables and chairs. Whew!) I will need them to help put posters throughout the school if they have a few minutes after work is completed in one of their classes.

Bring in Childhood Photos by Friday for Scholastic Dollars!

Teachers who bring in childhood photos by Friday will get five Scholastic Dollars to spend at the fair. I will start putting photos in the display next week. (Don’t forget to send your favorite book title to go with the photo).

Teen Read Week is October 16-22. This year’s theme: “Picture It @ Your Library!” We will give each student a bookmark. Some bookmarks will be marked for prizes. There will also be prize opportunities at the media website (skills quizzes, writing prompt, pre-quiz, Dewey Card contest…) and possibly on The Morning Show announcements.

Pompeii research student posts

I am so impressed with sixth grade students who blogged yesterday about Pompeii. Class 3, in particular, listened carefully and correctly posted lots of important facts. The Discovery video was excellent, providing drama to the historic tragedy. I know the speaker on the video spoke fast. Most of you heard A.D. 79, but a few thought Mount Vesuvius erupted in 1879 (A.D. and 18 do sound a lot alike...). Remember, this event happened a very long time ago. Be sure to include the correct date when you complete your projects for Mrs. Vinson.
I appreciate the excellent behavior for our sessions in the media center. Good luck on your volcanoes!

So, here's the challenge...
Students (parents and staff, too), I'll be lining the display case shelves with photos of teachers and staff members. Your mission? To identify as many of the faces as you can, as quickly as you can. The catch? No catch.
Well...unless you factor in the age of the photographs. You see, I've asked all teachers and staff to bring in a picture taken when they were babies or very young children. These pictures will be numbered, but there will be no names. I've asked them to jot down their favorite book (which will be scanned into the photo).
I know...we've done this before, but most of you were still at Centralhatchee, Ephesus or Heard Elementary then. Besides that, it was fun!
The student who matches the most teacher/staff names to the correct photos will win a book, prize from the Prize Box, cup of hot chocolate or green tea and a ticket for a one-on-one session in the Internet Technology Cafe! The staff member who correctly matches photos to names will also receive a prize.
This contest will coincide with our upcoming Book Fair (Sept. 30 -- Oct. 6) and also Teen Read Week (Oct. 16-22). This year's theme for Teen Read Week? Picture It @ Your Library! (See why we just had to do this contest again?)

Above and Beyond: The story of the 4Cs

P21 and FableVision partnered to produce a short, animated film called Above & Beyond. The film runs about 4 minutes and can be streamed or downloaded from the P21 website. "In an increasingly complex, demanding and competitive 21st century, students need to learn more than the 3R’s," according to P21. "...It's time to help them go “above & beyond”, by embracing the 4Cs – communication, collaboration, critical thinking and creativity."
That's for sure. The film shows how two very different students go about working on the same goal -- and make their project better by working on it together. “Above & Beyond” was written by NY Times #1 best-selling children’s book author/illustrator Peter H. Reynolds (The Dot, Ish, The North Star.)

Read Across America and Tech Literacy Cafe!

Read Across America will be Wednesday, March 2. Staff members will be invited to the media center to enjoy a Dr. Seuss cake and preview the new iPads in the Technology Literacy Cafe! Teachers will learn how to pull up eBooks through Safari to read and also see how documents can be saved and even printed. The five iPads will be used in small group settings to discuss technology and information literacy to answer such questions as, "Can all websites be trusted?" and "How do I check out an eBook?"
We're searching for a coffee beverage/latte machine to use in the cafe. Suggestions? Let me know!
Students (and staff) will be eligible for prizes from the Media Center Prize Box. Watch for specially marked bookmarks. Staff members who stop by to check out our cake and iPads will be entered into a drawing for special prizes just for them!

RFID technology makes identity theft easier

Technology is making it easier for thieves to steal personal information from credit cards through something called Radio Frequency Identification (RFID). RFID technology (look for the microchip on your cards). Someone with a scanning device can access and save all info of the RFID cards through your wallet. These cards do not have to be scanned directly. They send out signals with personal and account information.

Quick facts about RFID:

RFID tags can be read in a wide variety of circumstances, where barcodes or other optically read technologies are useless.
The tag need not be on the surface of the object (and is therefore not subject to wear)
The read time is typically less than 100 milliseconds
Large numbers of tags can be read at once rather than item by item.

Exceptional Media Program Open House

Heard County Middle School Media Center hosted an open house March 11, 2010 to celebrate the school's Exceptional Media Center Program for 2009 award. More than 50 people attended the event, including Heard County School Superintendent Benjamin Hyatt, Assistant Superintendent Jerry Prince, Assistant Superintendent Marianne Cole and Assistant Superintendent Jan Rayfield. Hello students in Mrs. Vinson's language arts classes! You are studying an interesting subject today. Pompeii is an extinct city. Mount Vesuvius erupted on a Tuesday, August 24 in AD 79. The eruption began with a small explosion and a thin layer of ash between 9-10 a.m. A massive explosion happened at 1 p.m., emitting a huge eruption cloud.

Ms. Arp's Language Arts classes are researching "eras" in United States history. Ms. Arp and I are working together to incorporate Georgia Performance Standards, 21st Century Skills and National Technology Standards into this lesson. Students locate their facts, along with visual and audio components, and will work together to create Power Point presentations. They are using Galileo for most of their research.
Today, we discussed plagiarism (stealing from the original author), copyright (even on websites), citing sources (on cards and within the PPT) and judging websites for value (wikipedia is an edited online encyclopedia...anyone can put anything on a website).
We are using 12 desktop student computers and three laptops connected to the wireless network in the media center.

Holes is a contemporary fiction book written by Louis Sachar. There are no illustrations. The book was published in 1998 by Farrar, Strass and Giroux. Potential use of this book in the classroom includes having students write about superstitions in their family (lucky and unlucky things). Students could also brainstorm words that sound the same spelled backwards.

The Yelnats family has a long history of bad luck, which appropriately, finds its way to young Stanley Yelnats. Stanley is wrongly convicted of a crime and sent to Camp Green Lake. While there, his luck changes as he discovers himself, a treasure and a best friend.

Welcome to my blog!
I am the media specialist at Heard County Middle School in Franklin, Georgia. Our students are in grades 6-8. I 've been media specialist here since our school opened in 2002 and we have a beautiful media center! I became a media specialist in 1993 and served two schools: Ephesus Elementary School (K-8) and Centralhatchee Elementary School (K-8). I worked at one school each morning and at the other each afternoon. Later, increased enrollment at Centralhatchee allowed me to serve that school full time before our county created the middle school from combining the middle grades from the other schools. I transferred to the new middle school, where I was able to fill the empty shelves with brand new books! It was very exciting and rewarding to be able to do this!
I have my National Board Certification Library Media/Early Childhood Through Young Adulthood (issued November 18, 2005). I have a bachelor's degree in Middle Grades Education. I have a master's degree in Media and am currently working on the Ed. S. degree in Media through the State University of West Georgia. The first degree program I completed (at WGC) was in Speech and Theatre Art with emphasis in Journalism (minor in Business Administration). I was editor of The Bowdon Bulletin for 10 years and also worked as reporter for two bi-weekly newspapers that later became the Daily Times-Georgian. I have freelanced articles and have had several published in the North Georgia Journal.
As you may guess, I love to read and write -- especially about local history. If I have free time, I like creating my own characters and putting them in their own stories. (I tease my children that my characters always do what they're told!).
My husband (Richard) and I have two children: Sabrina and Cullie. Sabrina will be a fourth grade teacher this fall and is working on her master's degree in Media. Cullie will be a sophomore. We have a farm that includes cows, chickens, ducks, guineas and turkeys. We also have a few Nubian and Boer goats, several cats and four Great Pyrenees livestock guardian dogs.
